Raccoon captured in Point Pleasant tests positive for rabies

March 11, 2009; Woman, 65, attacked in her yard:
While there is no way to ensure the captured raccoon is the same one that bit a 65-year-old Mallow Street woman Friday, there have been no reported sightings of aggressive raccoons since the one was captured the following morning, Lt. Richard Larsen said.

Tests conducted through the Ocean County Health Department confirmed that raccoon was rabies-positive, Larsen said.

Police responded to the woman's home at about 7:20 p.m. after she reported the raccoon ran toward her and her dog, then lunged at her leg with a scratch and a bite, Larsen said.

Earlier that same day police received a report of a raccoon behaving erratically during daylight hours in the same neighborhood, Larsen said.
