Raccoon tests positive for rabies

The Burlington County Health Department is reminding residents to avoid stray or wild animals after a raccoon found near Middlesex Avenue recently tested positive for rabies.

Anyone who had direct contact with the raccoon or other wild or stray animals in that area should contact a doctor immediately, county Health Officer Robert Gogats said in a statement Wednesday. Pet owners should make sure their pet's rabies shot is up-to-date, particularly if they have been in a fight with a wild animal, according to the county.

Rabies is transmitted through an animal's saliva, usually through a bite. The virus attacks the nervous system and is fatal in humans without treatment.
